In 1975, Jack Hemingway saw an opportunity to preserve the area that his father loved to hunt and convinced the Nature Conservancy to buy the property from the Sun Valley Company when it came up for sale. The first purchase was the 179 acres that the Sun Valley Company owned, consisting of most of the prime fishing area we know today. Since then, the Conservancy has added another 403 acres and through conservation easements with cooperative land owners, protects another 9,500 acres.
